Revising and Managing Multiple Ontology Versions in a Possible Worlds Setting

چکیده

To date, ontology research seems to have come to an equilibrium: there is a wide variety of theories, methods and tools for extracting, representing, storing and browsing ontologies. Furthermore, ontologies have become an integral part of many academic and industrial applications. There are, however, still deep theoretical problems to be resolved. One fundamental problem is ontology evolution. Essentially, changes occur when new knowledge is agreed on by the (not necessarily human) cognitive agents. Each change engages an evolution process from which a new (possibly inconsistent) ontology version may emerge. How will we manage multiple versions of an ontology in a scalable fashion? How will we represent differences and transformations between ontologies, and moreover, can we solve this question independently from any ontology representation model? This paper describes a research project that will investigate all these critical problems in ontology evolution.

Ontology Versioning as an Element of an Ontology-Management Framework

As ontology development becomes a more ubiquitous and collaborative process, the developers face the problem of managing multiple ontologies: comparing, aligning, and merging them, maintaining versions, translating between different formalisms. We present a uniform framework where the users can do many of this tasks, leveraging data and algorithms developed for one tool in another. We describe ...

Review for European Journal of Philosophy The Quantum Mechanics of Minds and Worlds

This book is about the central interpretative problem of quantum theory, the measurement problem, and the strategy for solving it that was suggested by Everett (1957). Barrett aims to explain these issues, with a minimum of technical apparatus; emphasizing instead the philosophical, especially metaphysical, aspects. In particular, he aims to survey in an even-handed way the various versions of ...

Managing ontology versions with a distributed blackboard architecture

Ontology versioning deals with the management of ontology changes, including the evaluation of the consequences arising from these changes. We describe a distributed, “pluggable” blackboard architecture for managing different ontology versions. This allows existing environments for ontology design to be naturally extended with versioning capabilities with little or no overhead. We also outline ...

Building Ontologies Collaboratively Using ContentCVS

OWL Ontologies are already being used in many application domains. In particular, OWL is extensively used in the clinical sciences; prominent examples of OWL ontologies are the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Thesaurus, SNOMED CT, the Gene Ontology (GO), the Foundational Model of Anatomy (FMA), and GALEN. These ontologies are large and complex; for example, SNOMED currently describes more than ...
